Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take a birth class?

We recommend starting with The Spinning Babies Birth Preparation Class in the second trimester (16 weeks). However, if you are just finding us into your third trimester, it would still be very helpful to take and we encourage you to do so!

The Birth Class should be taken around 24-32 weeks so you have ample time to prepare and do further research if you want to and to ask your provider any questions that might arise after taking the class. Once again, if timing does not work out perfectly in this window, taking the class before or after this time would still be very beneficial.

When do you release new class dates?

We post new dates to our website and our scheduling page each month. Class days will fluctuate each month. We are nurses & nurse practitioners, so our hospital schedules fluctuate. We post dates at least a month in advance.

Do I need to take all of the classes?

We think it’s a great idea to take all of our classes. Each class is different and has different agendas. We offer discounts to those who take multiple classes!

The Spinning Babies Birth Prep Class is a hands on class, and is different than a traditional birth class.

The Birth Class focuses mainly on labor and birth, with some basic information about newborns & postpartum. This class is different than Spinning Babies. It focuses on the labor process, decision making, interventions such as inductions & epidurals and how our partners can be prepared and supportive. We’ll answer questions like “when should I go to the hospital?” and “when is the best time to get an epdiural?”

The Newborn Class provides information about newborn care and gives you an intro for infant feeding (breastmilk and formula), health, hygiene, warning signs and how to comfort a crying baby. We also discuss routine newborn procedures, what to expect those first few weeks and months in terms of sleeping and infant behavior.

The Breastfeeding Class is taught by our IBCLC, and provides in-depth information about how breastfeeding works, how to help baby latch effectively, how to know you’re making enough milk, signs of an issue and what to do, information about going back to work and breastfeeding supplies that we recommend.

Can I take a class in person?

The Spinning Babies Birth Preparation Class is offered in-person only at this time in Midtown, NYC & Rockaway Beach, NY. The Birth Class is also offered in-person at least once a month in NYC.

What can I expect for the in person class vs. virtual?

Our virtual classes are taught via Zoom. We screen share to show our powerpoint presentation that includes a few videos.  Our in person birth class is taught in a 4- 4.5 hour session with a short break halfway, and light refreshments are served. The Birth Class in person class is limited to 4-5 couples at a time.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! We encourage bringing your partner or support person! One reservation grants admission for you and one support person!

What if I have to cancel?

Our class sizes are small to give you the best experience, and they often book up many weeks in advance. A last minute spot can be hard to fill.

  • We offer a 50% refund if cancellation is made 15 days in advance of your scheduled class.

  • Within 14 days of class, no refund is offered unless your spot can be filled by someone on a waitlist.

We know that situations can come up and highly recommend booking a class prior to 36 weeks. If there is a pregnancy related emergency/hospitalization we will do our best to accommodate.

What if none of the dates work for me?

Please send us an email at appts@specialdeliveryNY.com

We often get requests for specific classes and dates and would love to coordinate a group class that works for you. We also accommodate requests for private classes.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the classes?

Some insurance plans will reimburse for childbirth and breastfeeding classes! You should contact your insurance carrier to inquire about your plan specifically. We can provide you with a form to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
